No matter how excited you are to move into your new place, your first few weeks will probably feel foreign and, well, a little weird. Celebrating a birthday, planting a garden, or decorating for the holidays will help that “new-house feeling” fade, but waiting for a milestone requires a little too much patience. Here’s how you can feel settled and happy — even while you’re living among boxes.
. Hang art
Hanging art in your new home not only adds a little bit of you and your family’s style to the home, but it adds colour and more feelings of comfort. Research shows that simply looking at art can reduce stress and make you happy. And aside from the fact that we get a big boost of pleasure from looking at things that we consider to be beautiful, hanging art in your house helps instill your individual personality and interests into the space.

. Personalize your home
Most people tend to hold this one off for a while after moving into a new home, because there is simply more important things to do like, setting up the kitchen, or your office desk. However, what these people don’t realize is that actually adding personalize items like, a family picture, or your kids drawings on the fridge, or even anything homemade, will actually relief a lot of stress and anxiety because it will instantly make you feel at home.
. Add extra light
Few things make a house feel less inviting than insufficient lighting, or worse, fluorescent lighting. Make sure your existing lighting fixtures emit warm temperature shades of white or yellow, which promote relaxation. Then add additional lighting as appropriate. Pretty much any space can be made instantly more homey with the introduction of some well-placed lamps, string lights, or a battery-powered flameless candle in a lantern. Candles, too, will add a nice amount of warmth and coziness to a space.
. Add some plants!
Just like art and animals, plants and flowers are well-recognized for their ability to positively impact our mood and reduce stress, among other things. Add some plants around the home, it adds a spice of you and nature that everyone loves.
. Air quality/ signature scent
Make your home smell nice. Whatever scent you choose, having a warm, nice smell to your home allows you to be calm in the space you’re in.
Example: “Like a cast iron pan that needs seasoning, I break in the space with an expensive steak on the stovetop and favorite bottle of wine. I love the way the heat and the smells ‘season’ my home.”
. Inviting entrance
Add spice to your front door/entry way immediately. Once again this is something a lot of new home owners consider a LAST step. However, we believe its one of the first most important steps into making your new house feel like home.
. Up your comfort
Add those blankets, pillows, and all things comfy!! This adds a personalized feature to your home allowing that instant peace, and stress relief.
. Keep it clean/ no clutter
You know how it always feels the best when you’re climbing into freshly washed sheets? That’s because it’s extremely difficult to be completely comfortable in a place that’s dirty and/or filled with clutter. If you’re trying to figure out how to make a home cozy, you need to start with making it clean. Your physical space is an expression of the way you feel, and if you want to feel truly relaxed and at home, you should make an effort to keep your space worthy of snuggling into. Regularly wash your sheets and towels, keep your floors and other surfaces clean, and make it a habit to clear clutter before it gets out of hand.
. AND last but not least, Class up your closet!
Most people start unpacking the common spaces first, but focusing on efforts of your closet is extremely important and helps relief that anxiety because Monday’s are hard enough without having to search for your favorite sweater.
